Subject Releasing a non session scoped lock

How does one release a non-session scoped lock?

I have a test that locks a node.  when I look at the Lock instance returned
by getLock() i see the userId as the lock holder.

when I create a new session with the same userId on the SimpleCredentials, I
cannot release the lock.  When I look at the lock on the node in the new
session, the lock holder is none.
