IMHO, custom node types not needed for real life application if you do not want strictly check
node types that
may be created by other then your CMS applications.
OCM is easy and convinient way to work with JCR. You get not an abstract tree of nodes but
POJOs that can be easily
stored, retreived, updated, searched and so on.
