I'm not a Jackrabbit expert, but the scenario sounds like it could be
solved by editing through the WebDAV interface of Jackrabbit instead of
Jackrabbit directly.  Either as mounting as a WebDAV-webfolder, or by
using IDE tools that support WebDAV.

Publishing is really relative to HOW you publish, whether by a CMS over
Jackrabbit or some other means.
