journals to distribute writes.

To some degree, yes. But for example with the new MongoMK the locked
areas are much more fine-grained (individual nodes) than with the
SegmentMK (the entrie tree), so it isn't an issue except in cases
where lots of concurrent writes modify the same nodes.
