does this involves only the lucene index, or the \uFFFF separator is contained somewhere in
the repository?
If it's only in the index, couldn't be safe to just upgrate to the lucene 2.3 API and forse
users to regenerate the lucene index when upgrading? (given that also the lucene index format
is changed from 2.2 to 2.3 and, although compatible, recreating it from scratch wouldn't hurt)
The long list of performace improvements in lucene 2.3 could really worth the upgrade...
