thanks for sharing this valuable information and providing a patch!

unfortunately i don't have an ibm jvm at hand and therefore can't test it.
is this ibm issue (handling of empty strings in java.util.Properties) documented
anywhere? i couldn't find any related information.

the fix will probably be slightly more complicated than the one you proposing.
the index file handling needs to be reviewed as well. if e.g. an index value n
is assigned to the empty uri this information must not be lost on restart since
the index value might be referenced by a persisted item state.
