for the time being i'd suggest you use NodeTypeRegistry directly, i.e.:

        Workspace wsp = session.getWorkspace();
        NodeTypeManager ntMgr = wsp.getNodeTypeManager();
        NodeTypeRegistry ntReg =
                ((NodeTypeManagerImpl) ntMgr).getNodeTypeRegistry();
