Both approaches are supported in the jcr taglib.

the example 2 would be

in a SessionListener:
session.setAttribute("mySessionKey",mySession)

in jsp:
    <jcr:nodes node="/" var="node" traverserDepth="1" 
session="mySessionKey">
       <c:out value="${node.path}"/>
    </jcr:nodes>
