Greg Stein commented on INFRA-2851:
-----------------------------------

The original concept for the Apache Retreat was something along the lines of:

"Hey guys. I just rented a house down in Costa Rica for the week. Anybody wanna come hang
out? We can hack and drink and socialize."

The mailing list was created as a Google Group specifically to provide for community/cooperative/non-centralized
setup and running of these kinds of gatherings.

retreats@apache implies centralization. The last Retreat and the upcoming Hursley Retreat
are nothing like the basic concept. They have sponsorships, sign ups, "barcamp" attachments,
etc.

The WHOLE IDEA was to get away from that and create a simple name for low-key gatherings of
people. I dislike this direction, and am bothered by the abuse of the concept that the "Apache
Retreat" name was intended for.
