Actually, the test case is even simpler:

$ echo "1.a" | /usr/xpg4/bin/awk '$1 == "1.A" { print $1 }'
1.a

Looks like the POSIX awk on Solaris/x86 doesn't correctly
handle strings with a numeric prefix.
