Yes, this does sound like a file association issue, where OOo clobbered the
IM file associations.   That seems to match the description.

But I've never heard of anything like this.  Don't most IM clients save as
.txt or .html ?

I don't a connection.  File association are determined by registry
settings, not quick start.
