             Bug #: 119087
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: The hyphenation applications are not consistently
                    correct per established dictionaries
    Classification: Application
           Product: Word processor
           Version: OOo 3.3
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: Windows XP
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: major
          Priority: P3
         Component: editing
        AssignedTo: ooo-issues@incubator.apache.org
        ReportedBy: drreis1@yahoo.com

The hyphenation applications (the use of them) are not consistently correct per
established dictionaries. Also, the use of a proper hyphenation at the end of
or near a page boundary (breaking up a word to get a more even right side of
the page alignment) are not consistently applied either, when the option to
automatically hyphenate is chosen under the Format, Paragraph, Text Flow tab,
and Hyphenation-using the number 2-Characters at line begin, 3-Characters at
line end, 1-Maximum number (of lines) with consecutive hyphens.

For instance, 1) I have seen many instances of inappropriate hyphens
automatically applied by Swriter such as the following: import-ance rather than
the accepted impor-tance or import-ant rather than impor-tant; assist-ing
rather than the accepted assis-ting or assist-ance rather than assis-tance,
emphas-ize rather than empha-size, etc..
2) Also not placing hyphens when there is room for words and hyphens, like
nec-essary, adap-tations, con-tinue, help-ful, fo-cused, per-sonal, dur-ing,
main-taining, etc., keeping them all whole instead, which leaves a big gap.
What it does do in those situations, if I manually put in the hyphen, it tags
them as incorrect, even though the dictionaries state that is how they
should/can be properly divided.
3) It does the same thing when I try to correct the unacceptable hyphen points
mentioned above, often removing letters or tagging them as incorrect, when in
fact they have been verified in dictionaries as the only correct choice over
what the Swriter automatically chose.
4) Another problem is when I don't choose to automatically use a hyphen (under
Format, Paragraph...), in any situation where a word is not stand alone (such
as the case with every-thing or any-one are stand alone) it will mark them as
incorrect. When I run the spell-checker, it treats them like they are in a
wrap around, rather than being at the end of a page/line border like they are.
5) One last bug is that Swriter will allow hyphenated words across pages/from
one page to another, which is also considered unacceptable practice in several
Style manuals and for book formatting.

These software based bug problems are not only frustrating, but they cause a
lot of extra work for all of us and they should be relatively easily fixed.
Thanks for your help in correcting these problems ASAP.
