Kerning does make neighboring letters and digits look pretty.

However, if my observation is correct,
most printed material (books, magazines, etc.)
have digits with the same width, so that a column of numbers
is always aligned in whatever font used,
except for rare fonts where "1" is itself narrower.

So, while kerning explains the variable width of characters.
it distracts and destroys the fixed-widthness of digits when
you have long strings of digits in numbers printed.

In the similar way Microsoft Word has a bug that even in Courier font and
Chinese-traditional MingLiU,
the "space" character is a little bit narrower than a letter, and we
are fortunate that OpenOffice Writer does not have this problem.

Thanks.
