Aliases were absent from theBourne shell , which had the more powerful facility of functions. The alias concept was imported intoBourne Again Shell (bash) and theKorn shell (ksh). ___ So I think we cannot count on having alias for older bin/sh. FWIW, the checkbashisms script (from sourceforge) is very cool but not without flaws: some shells do support some bashisms, and in the case of fetch_tarballs.sh, which is clean now, it appears the Solaris shell still doesn't like it. cheers, Pedro.
