>From http://symphony.lotus.com, see where it says "Get Lotus Symphony
3 Today!" on the upper right of the page?  It will suggest a version,
based on what it can figure out of your OS and language preferences.
>From what you say, it sounds like it is suggesting an .rpm for you.
Click the "change" link to pick another download package.  There will
be one for Ubuntu.
