OpenOffice.org सॉफ्टवेयर मुख्यतः तीन लाइसैंस के अन्तर्गत है, १) GPL (Gnu/General Public Licence), २) LGPL (Gnu Lesser General Public License), ३) SISSL (Sun Industry Standards Source License)। इनका अर्थ क्या है? यहाँ इनका एक छोटा वर्णन है।

सबसे ज्यादा लोकप्रिय लाइसैंस है - GPL (Gnu/General Public License)। यह लाइसैंस, ऑपन-सोर्स सॉफ्टवेयर (वो सॉफ्टवेयर जिनके मूल कोई भी देख सकते है और उसका उपयोग कर सकते है - इसके बारे में जानने के लिए यहाँ देखिए) का प्रचार और à� �ªà¥à¤°à¤¸à¤¾à¤° करने के लिए बनाया गया है। अगर कोई व्यक्ति या संस्था किसी ऑपन-सोर्स सॉफ्टवेयर (जो GPL के अन्तर्गत है) को नया रूप दे, यह नया सॉफ्टवेयर भी GPL के अन्तर्गत ही होना चाहिए। यदि आप इस नये सॉफ्टवेयर का प्रसार करना चाहें, किसी भी फायदे और पैसे में, तो आपको सभी अधिकार (इस सॉफ्टवेयर के संदर्भ में) भी देने चाहिए जो आपके पास है। आपको देखना चाहिए कि उन लोगों को भी सोर्स (मूल) मिले।
