I'm able to reproduce the error on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS now.

I'll see if I can narrow it down and find a fix.  I don't have a lot
of time today, but I'll try next week.  If I don't find a fix by next
Friday I'll revert Devin's patches.

Is that good for you?
