My config already have:

DocumentRoot "/export/ftp/"
<Directory /export/ftp>
     Options Indexes FollowSymLinks

I suspect that you're thinking about the subrequests not having to do 
lstat+stat. The problem I'm talking about is (probably) due to mod_ftp 
stat:ing all files first, and then doing subrequests which in turn 
stats all files (except the large ones, which was my initial problem) 

My observations are based on the strace output, so I'm rather unclued 
about which mechanisms causes what.

In any case, the LFS issue(s) needs to be fixed first IMO. Performance 
issues are a non-issue if the thing can't be used at all due to
