Subject EG Meeting at JavaOne 4 June 2009
Date Tue, 09 Jun 2009 14:07:40 GMT
Hi all,

Last week at JavaOne we held an impromptu meeting of some of the JSR 326 EG
members and two Eclipse Memory Analysis Tool committers

The primary objective was just to meet and put faces to names and voices.
We discussed a couple of subjects but since it was a small group we did not
reach any resolutions.

Present were Steve Poole, Alois Reitbauer, Konstantin Bobrovsky, Krum
Tsvetkov, Andrew Johnson.

Konstantin raised the subject of improving the register support in the
API - especially to help JVM and JIT developers debug problems.

We discussed the general concern of having to ensure Sun was adequetely
supported by the Reference Implementation for adoption of the API to be
sucessful. The view was that the RI does not have to be the best
implementation but it does need to be credible, useful and usable.
Currently the RI contains a HPROF reader and little else, though a prototype
jvmti agent designed for extracting local variables etc was underway. This
should aid the EG deliberations and allow users to gain some immediate value
from the project.

Our general view was that the API should focus on helping solve every day
Java problems first and larger and more specialised problems later.

Alois explained a little about the requirements of users from the point of
view of snapshotting a live system. The major requirement was being able
to get selective data out of the system as fast as possible - writing to
disk could easily be too expensive.

We do need to expand on this topics - if Konstantin or Alois want to comment
more that would be great.

Cheers

Steve
