There is a notion in Hive called StorageHandler; these are used to add
hbase and cassandra support.  Hcat 0.4 currently doesn't work well with
storage handlers but there was a plan to get that to work down the road (no
idea when).  This would allow you to read/push data from/to different data
stores.
