Well, from my own experiences with Traffic Server, I'd recommend no less
than 4 mentors, and also make sure all mentors either are on the IPMC,
or request to join the IPMC as soon as the proposal gets accepted.

I have no idea if what I just said goes against the Incubator rules, but
fewer then 4 IPMC mentors risks making the incubator process less
productive, and IMO, less educational for the podling.

Cheers,

Then it's time to document this in our rules.

Java package spaces have always carried significant importance in the

This convention is so taken for granted in the Java community that I

I have a different opinion. Java package spaces have always carried
significant importance in the java community in terms of who is
providing stewardship of the code.

Having users change the packages when they move to a *new* version
requires no significant burden. It happens all the time in the Java
world and we are not treading on new ground here.

I haven't looked at other Incubator projects to see if
the problem exists outside of Thrift, but the information
was written in a general way because I'm sure some incubating
projects aren't all that familiar with how Apache views svn
distributions.

The problem with Thrift isn't exactly sudden, so there's no
need for the IPMC to be immediately concerned with it. Hopefully
they will cut a release before their next reporting period
and things will be mostly fine again.

> > distribution of our software. End users ALWAYS need to
> > be directed to formally approved releases. Not only does
> > that give the project space to do active development on
> > branches / trunk that hasn't been put to a vote yet, it
> > means that users have clear guidelines where the project
> > is willing to extend whatever stability promises it wishes
> > to make to it's users.
> >
> > The foundation does not consider subversion as a valid

> > we don't expect software in subversion to be vetted for

> > please do not point end users to svn!
> >
>
> I'm glad you have a way you like to do things "at Apache".

It's not my way, it's foundation policy, and part of what I'm paid to do
is enforce it. For details on the policy see

http://www.apache.org/dev/release.html#what

I'll quote the relevant section for you:

 What Is A Release?

"Releases are, by definition, anything that is published beyond the
group that owns it. In our case, that means any publication outside
the group of people on the product dev list. If the general public is being
instructed to download a package, then that package has been released.
Each PMC must obey the ASF requirements on approving any release.
How you label the package is a secondary issue, described below."
Things that violate the release policy are things like download pages
on the website that point at subversion instead of an actual vetted release
(something Thrift has continued to do despite gentle nudging by the IPMC).

> But we're not children and we don't owe you anything. When you treat
> us like this you discourage involvement and drive people away from
> the Apache process.

I'm not exactly sure who we and you are but I'll assume you mean we thrift devs
and you joes. I'll remind you I started getting involved in Thrift after
Leo Simons sent this list a gentle prodding to fix the download page. Ignoring
him was strike 1. I sent you guys a patch to address your incorrect LICENSE
document in THRIFT-387, in the hopes we could cut a release in short order after the legal
issues were addressed. Ignoring me was strike 2. I'm getting the impression that you guys
have also decided to ignore Todd Lipcom, who put in considerable effort into a license audit
in THRIFT-622.

> I'm sure people are perfectly willing to direct others that subversion
> revisions aren't releases, so don't be an jerk about it.

That isn't the point. If you tell users this is where the software is that they should use,
you are releasing it to them: the lack of packaging or versioning on the software makes no
difference. Subversion is for people who wish to participate in project development, not
for end users. The fact
is that the extended thrift community has been using subversion to distribute
the software to end users for a long time now, and that needs to be addressed.

At Apache we do our work where it can be inspected by
the public while it is in progress. That work, carried
out in the subversion repository, is not to be publicized
to end users as a place to pick up the latest and greatest
distribution of our software. End users ALWAYS need to
be directed to formally approved releases. Not only does
that give the project space to do active development on
branches / trunk that hasn't been put to a vote yet, it
means that users have clear guidelines where the project
is willing to extend whatever stability promises it wishes
to make to it's users.

The foundation does not consider subversion as a valid
distribution mechanism for software releases. In fact
we don't expect software in subversion to be vetted for
licensing issues until it comes time for a release, so
please do not point end users to svn!

Nicholas L Gallardo said the following on 11/20/2009 02:32 PM:
>
> This looks interesting. To the comment here:
>
> "An alignment to the JAX-RS implementation in Apache CXF could not
> only help removing the dependencies to the CDDL-licensed code taken
> from Jersey but also help providing a fully framework independent
> implementation with a larger group of developers and thus higher quality."
>
> Assuming you're relying on just the base JAX-RS support, I'd like to
> see the JAX-RS engine be pluggable so that it could support both CXF
> and Wink.
>
One thing that could be easily shared across implementations are the
default providers. Having a pluggable JAX-RS implementation providing
base JAX-RS support would of course be better. Our implementations is
not directly based on the servlet api, but uses wrhapi
(http://wrhapi.wymiwyg.org/) this is to have a more minimal api for http
requests and thus make it easier to implement filters (currently we have
a Filter for authentication).
>
>
> Either way, nice work. I've been curious to see how Semantic Web
> constructs could be manifested in JAX-RS applications.
>
On one hand the possibility to bind a root-resource to an RDF-type, two
examples:
-
http://scm.trialox.org/main/org.clerezza.app.conceptmanager/file/49e9ccc35277/org.clerezza.app.conceptmanager.core/src/main/java/org/clerezza/app/conceptmanager/core/ConceptTypeHandler.java#l1
-
http://scm.trialox.org/main/org.clerezza.platform.content/file/e985ea0e81b3/src/main/java/org/clerezza/platform/content/DiscobitsTypeHandler.java#l1

The other part is having Root resource methods returning GraphNodes
(i.e. a resource in a graph), the server will then return the context
(aka minimul self contained graph) of the node for clients requesting an
RDF format (e.g. rdf/json) while rendering the resource using a template
(typically a ScalaServerPage) for other output formats.

An example of a ScalaServerPage producing XHTML:
http://scm.trialox.org/main/org.clerezza.platform.accountcontrolpanel/file/b4d412a91998/src/main/resources/org/clerezza/platform/accountcontrolpanel/control-panel.xhtml#l1

The corresponding JAX-RS methods returning GraphNodes are in:
http://scm.trialox.org/main/org.clerezza.platform.accountcontrolpanel/file/b4d412a91998/src/main/java/org/clerezza/platform/accountcontrolpanel/AccountControlPanel.java#l1

While I think that this thread is important to take place before the
potential podling graduates, I have a simple question that is about
the point of order. We don't really need to resolve this particular
issue before we vote on this podling do we? Won't this issue be a
problem for the mentors and the podling community to resolve? If they
can't then the podling bids a cheery adieu.

IIUC, the only thing that they are missing is a champion and a a few
mentors, no?

Again, I'm not trying to quash this thread. Just curious. :)

Hello all,

I would like to formally present the incubator proposal for Clerrezza,
an OSGi-based modular application and set of components (bundles) for
building RESTful Semantic Web applications and services.

The full proposal can be found on the wiki at:

http://wiki.apache.org/incubator/ClerezzaProposal

I'm looking forward to questions and feedback.

Cheers,
Reto

Listed as weak copyleft with its ilk like EPL and CDDL: "By attaching
a prominent label to the distribution and requiring an explicit action
by the user to get the reciprocally-licensed source, users are less
likely to be unaware of restrictions significantly different from
those of the Apache License"

If I'm right, it might be good to mention that it's optional, in the proposal.

>>> open-subscription, but for private).
>>>
>>> Buildbot migration is now in-progress. I also expect some nightly
>>> builds to begin soon. At that point, we'll have tarballs if anybody
>>> would like to perform an audit. Hyrum has already fed some patches
>>> back to RAT to ease running RAT on release tarballs.
>>>
>>
>> I ran a RAT report (0.6 version) Â on subversion trunk but theres alot
>> of *noise* from it. I have opened a bug ticket for license header
>> review here:
>>
>> http://subversion.tigris.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=3529
>>
>> It would make review easier if the files without headers had them
>> added. If thats considered a good idea, I'll try and help submitting
>> patches.
>>
>
> I see the following in that ticket:
>
> Â Â GPL - Â Copyright Free Software Foundation, Inc.
> Â Â Â build/config.guess
> Â Â Â build/config.sub
>
> Â Â ????? - Copyright X Consortium
> Â Â Â build/install-sh
>
> I don't rightly know what to do about config.guess and config.sub;
> they're essential parts of the autoconf system, so we (currently) can't
> really build without them -- but their GPL does not affect the compiled
> code, so that should be OK. Note that at least APR has these two files,
> under the same license, in the same place in their tree.

Sorry I'm no expert on licensing. Might be worth asking the APR guys
or following up on the legal-discuss mailing list. If it is OK to
distribute then it might be that something just needs adding to the
LICENSE and/or NOTICE files - but I'm no expert on that. I submitted a
patch to add the ant build file that runs RAT, since it seems like a
good idea to build up and document the list of exclusions for these
kind of files that raise flags but or actually OK.

I also added the latest RAT report run against trunk to the ticket
(can't currently get hold of the nightly distros)

http://subversion.tigris.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=3529

Niall

> For install-sh, we could probably replace it with APR's install.sh. The
> latter is also based on the X consortium's original, but modified and
> mogrified, and it now says it's subject to the Apache license.
>
> I'm testing the Subversion build now to see if it works with APR's
> install.sh, and will switch over if everything appears to be OK.

>>>> we would like to propose Openmeetings project to join the incubator.
>>>>
>>>> Full Proposal:
>>>> http://wiki.apache.org/incubator/OpenmeetingsProposal
>>> Calling a vote is premature. Therefore my vote is -1.
>>>
>>> Your proposal does not yet have a confirmed champion and you don't
>>> have sufficient mentors yet.
>>>
>>> I'm still toying with the idea of mentoring, but I'm still unclear
>>> with respect to the legal situation. I've not seen a clear consensus
>>> that it will ever be possible to produce a cleanly licensed
>>> application that does not require the use of LGPL/GPL code.
