This is fud. It has nothing to do with maven's release plugin or maven
at all. Maven has always been perfectly capable of producing buildable
source distros - its just down to how a project sets up maven - as
with any build tool.

This was pointed out to the maven project a few months ago and they
changed their practices and are now releasing proper, buildable source
packages.
