Sure. Perhaps I'm being a bit too anti-sourceforgish here. But still
there is this feeling in my guts that it might produce more useful
(more features, higher quality, faster, ... take your pick) projects
if there is some cooperation. I have learned this back from the days
where everybody (including me of course) started to write his own 3D
graphics engine after the first 3D engins came out ...

Mhmm, this sounds more like a goal than a solution, especially the
more projects come in. It might help if there is a little nudge into
this direction, such as joint mailing lists or discussion forums. And
I in the case of OpenJPA, if both the DB PMC would be willing to
sponsor it, and the project would be interested in being sponsored by
the DB PMC (perhaps even graduate to DB) then this would foster
cooperation or at least communication as well.
