I just started couchdb with the root user ("sudo couchdb"). Result: It  
worked!

Now, there is obviously something really amiss with the user rights  
for the CouchDB files on my system. But how do I find out what is  
wrong? Even the debug log did not seem to spit out any helpful  
information.
