An alternative would be emitting the field you'd like uniqued as the
key, and then querying a reduce with group=true.

However, unless you have a lot of values that share the same key, it
might be better to just use a map view and do the uniquing on the
client (or try one of the strategies discussed earlier in this
thread.)
