Yep the Oracle license has some restrictions on redistributing the JDK.

As for reference sizes, I thought smaller references could be used in newer JDKs after 1.6.0u14
when -XX:UseCompressedOops is enabled (it was buggy then).  This is enabled by default on
JDK 1.6.0u23 and onward when this feature stabilized.

Perhaps this testing was done pre-JDK 1.6.0u23?
