Subject [jira] [Commented] (AMBARI-546) Puppet fails to install 32-bit JDK properly on RHEL6
Date Thu, 14 Jun 2012 18:36:42 GMT

Hitesh Shah commented on AMBARI-546:

To clarify, Ambari does not package jdk but expects the user to agree with the Oracle licence
on their website, download the jdk binaries and copy them into the required location.

As for 32/64, currently, the implementation has a hardcoded approach to always run the datanode
and tasktracker in 32-bit mode. This was done based on the discovery ( based on performance
tests on MapReduce ) that running the DNs and TTs in 64-bit mode actually reduced overall
performance for the same heap size of the process - one of the main reasons behind it was
more memory used for object addresses resulting in more frequent GC with limited heap size.
( All others are run in 64-bit by default ).

The above requires both 32 and 64-bit binaries to be used for various components.

This is just the current implementation and could be changed to have an optional flag to control
what mode to run the DNs and TTs in. Could you go ahead and file a jira for this enhancement.

If you would like to contribute a patch for it too, we would highly appreciate it :)

> Puppet should ensure glibc.i686 is installed before trying to install jdk.
