Not sure if this will help you or not, but you could try doing it programmatically:

public void someBeanMethod(ActionEvent event){
	try {
		...
	} catch (Throwable e) {
		...
	} finally {
		// Here you can set up what the target is for this event (or any component for that matter)
		RequestContext.getCurrentInstance().addPartialTarget(event.getComponent().getParent());
	}
}

If so, then http://wiki.apache.org/myfaces/Partial-page_rendering is
incorrect, which could be the case.

Also, in case you misunderstood my previous email (wasn't sure based on your
response), try having the PARENT of the outputText also have partialTriggers
set in addition to the outputText itself. Otherwise, ignore.
