If you want to customize an icon out of existence, then you would do use 
the 'inhibit' property value in your skin definition like this::
.AFRequiredIcon:alias {content:inhibit}
If you want to change the icon from the * to a word, you can do 
something like this:
.AFRequiredIcon:alias {content:REQ; color:orange}
