the rest of the class, when a method is executed that requires a request and/or a response
and one is not present, an UnsupportedOperationException is thrown.  The methods in question
will throw a NullPointerException.  Therefore, we need to add a _checkRequest(); or _checkResponse();
call to the following methods:
