Well, the above is not exactly true.  class="foo" alone does not get styled at all in IE.
It is more like it interprets .foo.p_AFDisabled as:
.foo.p_AFDisabled, .p_AFDisabled

However, the skinning engine uses those for states mainly. For example, af|component:myState
will be parsed to .af_component.p_AFMyState in the generated CSS and the renderer will add
