Essentially the Debian/Ubuntu setup is not to use a big long config
but to include the contents of directories.

On Debian, you probably want to put everything into your
 sites-available/my-site-name
file (create one if it isn't there) then do
 a2ensite my-site-name
and
 /etc/init.d/apache2 reload

You may need to
 a2dissite default

The directives are all the same (it's just where they are that
differs).
