I would use SetEnvIf in addition:

SetEnvIf Request_URI "^/sync/?(.*)" mysubpath=$1
(Syntax not tested)

or something similar to get the path into a environment variable.
Using a RewriteRule/RewriteCond may be appropriate in your case, too
(especially with the E-Flag?)
