I compiled apache myself, but set it up to use Apple's means of starting and stopping (The Web Sharing pane). I never investigated how to manually add it to the list of services to run at startup. Ah.  I compiled apache myself, but set it up to use Apple's means of starting and stopping (The Web Sharing pane).  I never investigated how to manually add it to the list of services to run at startup.

I assume you are referring to "Web Sharing", which is already off.  I installed apache2 through compiling the source myself instead of a binary for Mac if that makes a difference.
