Why are you using 1.3? Version 2.2 would be a much better choice.

I don't think you've read the virtual hosting docs. Perhaps you should
start here:

What's with all the back-slashes? I don't think you want those?

Have you read this:

What you probably want is something more like:

UseCanonicalName off
NameVirtualHost *:80

<VirtualHost *:80>
VirtualDocumentRoot /home/www/vhosts/%3/%2.1/%2.2/%2

<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName mail.foobar.lan
RewriteStuff (corrected and tested using the RerwiteLog)
