I couldn't get that to work though the Live  HTTP Headers extension to
Firefox is very handy. In the end this is the code snippet that worked .....

LoadModule expires_module "modules/mod_expires.so"

# turn on the module for this directory
ExpiresActive on

# set the default to 24 hours
ExpiresDefault A86400

# cache common graphics for 5 days
ExpiresByType image/jpg A518400
ExpiresByType image/gif A518400
ExpiresByType image/jpeg A518400
ExpiresByType image/png A518400

# cache CSS for 1 hour
ExpiresByType text/css A3500
