What does it mean? Does it process index.html.var, show directory listing or
an error?

What's index.rhtml ? Is that pure html file or does it have to be processed
somehow? if it's a HTML, did you teach apache about it via this directive?

AddType text/html .rhtml

(FYI, if the index.html.var is a type-map file, I simply call it index.var
and have it as first in DirectoryIndex for the negotiation to work whenever
it's possible)
