OK. What's happening here is that the pattern matches everything - so you get an infinite
loop. You need either more specific rules eg:

RewriteRule /dir1/(.*)$    http://example.com/index/$1
RewriteRule /dir2/(.*)$    http://example.com/index/$1 etc...

or, you need a RewriteCond to skip if the URL begins with "index", eg,

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/index/.*
RewriteRule ^(.*)$    http://example.com/index/$1
