You should look into mod_proxy's ProxyPass and ProxyPassReverse directives instead of mod_rewrite.
That's likely to be more than adequate.

An even better solution might be to use Burp proxy http://portswigger.net/proxy/ instead of
Apache. You will attain a higher level of transparency with that tool that with Apache.
