Thanks Joshua for the idea. We would try it.

We actually have more than 20 such processes even after server has been
idle.

Btw, what is the time after which a process dies in case there is no
further request and the number of spare servers is more than 2?

Yes, although it may be more like 3 or 4 processes because of certain
support processes.

If you have more than that when the server is idle, then you should
fire up mod_status and look at the server-status handler to see what
they are doing.
