Many times when I run into these types of problems on
Solaris it is because of a LD_LIBRARY_PATH or search PATH
issue.  Make sure to prepend the location of your GNU build
of make and other tools - same thing for the library paths.
 There should be no reason why you can't use the same
PREFIX.  That should only come into play when you do the
install.

Another thing to try is to run a process trace (truss) on
it to see what it is trying to do during the build if the
above doesn't help.
