Possibly you're starting and stopping the wrong apache. What's your OS?
(hint: always mention this). If it's a recent Linux, it'll have apache
bundled. If you installed your own version, you might have two

To check, look in conf/ for the PID of the last apache started.
Do "ps -ef | grep httpd" to see the PID of the apache parent (2nd PID
column). This should correspond with the file. If not, you might have
two versions.

Current if I go to I get the apache page. When I
go to stop apache by doing ./apachectl it states that the httpd (pid
14?) not running. How can I get to the page id httpd is not running. I
need to stop it so I can test ssl.
