I've done something like this with rules like this:

    <Location /proxy>
      AuthName Sample
      Require valid-user
      RewriteEngine On
      RewriteRule ... ... [P]
    </Location>

This is a bit simplified; the configuration is actually mostly
generated by mod_perl, but something like this should work.
