There is a tool called ab (for apachebench) included with the server. 
You can try that.

Depends on what modules you use, and also on the operating system and
other details.

There is some guidance at
http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/misc/perf-tuning.html

But in general, this is a very complicated issue, and one that depends
very much on details of server load and hardware.  Feel free to ask
specific questions, but general advice in the area is hard to give.
