Keeping the query simple, I've tried :

You have new mail in /var/spool/mail/root
[root@web1 root]# su - apache
-bash-2.05b$ /usr/bin/ldapsearch -x -LLL "(uid=rfritz)"
No such object (32)

Although this works for other users, for instance:

su - rfritz
[1] 4398
[1] 4488
MANPATH: Undefined variable.
/etc/csh.cshrc: error in /etc/profile.d/jdk-1.4.2_03.csh
[rfritz@web1 ~]$ /usr/bin/ldapsearch -x -LLL "(uid=rfritz)"
dn: uid=rfritz,ou=users,dc=example,dc=net
uid: rfritz
<snip>

But it does not work for this user (which incidently is not in the LDAP DB):
 su - aewhale
[aewhale@web1 aewhale]$ /usr/bin/ldapsearch -x -LLL "(uid=rfritz)"
No such object (32)

WHY?
