Sorry, it's the shell syntax, not gzip.  In general, you need a "-"
argument to a command that normally takes a filename to indicate that
input is coming from stdin.

However, that may be a red herring, in which case I apologise for
talking nonsense.  But I suspect that your problem is with the shell:
maybe the shell specified by your SHELL environment variable doesn't
work with this particular syntax.
