sorry, but just to summarize; your apache works when you don't load
mod_status.so? 

Yes.

what's in the error log? 

No logs created. Apache can not be started with a message

bash-2.03# ./apachectl start
Syntax error on line 250 of /usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf:
Cannot load /usr/local/apache2/modules/mod_status.so into server: ld.so.1: /usr/
local/apache2/bin/httpd: fatal: relocation error: file /usr/local/apache2/module
s/mod_status.so: symbol __floatdisf: referenced symbol not found
bash-2.03# cd ../modules/

also, output from 
# ldd /usr/local/apache2/bin/httpd 
might be good to know.
