Thank you for your response.

I kind of doubt MSDN would be able to answer my question about Apache 
localhost, they kind a like Windows servers.

You are correct in that commercial web hosting servers running Apache 
will display the Favicon.ico with just the favicon.ico saved in the web 
site root.

the problem here is the favicon is in my localhost root for the web site 
in my hard drive and my browsers will not render the favicon.ico file, 
not until I place the link in the head of the index.html file.
