Yeah, it appears to be quite old.  You may want to install from source at 
www.openssl.org (it will by default install into /usr/local, and will not 
conflict with your currently-installed openssl, which other packages surely 
depend on).

Once you have the latest openssl (latest appears to be 0.9.7c) installed in 
/usr/local, you can tell apache to use those instead with some 'configure' flags 
as Luis pointed out...
