Are you sure you had that in the "root web" and not in a <Directory> block?
RewriteRules act on differently scoped URIs depending on if you use then in
a <Directory>/.htaccess or in virtual host/main server context. See:
    http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/mod_rewrite.html#rewriterule

If you haven't enabled it already, enable your rewrite log:
    http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/mod_rewrite.html#rewritelog

It will tell you exactly why your rules doesn't work. If you still have
problems, please provide us with an extract from it.
